WHAT THE RESEARCH SAYS:

“Art has been woven into the fabric of human existence since the dawn of time. It holds a unique place in our lives, exceeding its aesthetic function and becoming a means of communication and self-expression. Art has the remarkable ability to transcend language barriers and touch our emotional core directly. Numerous studies have highlighted its positive impact on mental health, demonstrating how engaging in artistic activities can reduce stress, enhance self-awareness, and promote a sense of well-being.” - LA Trauma Research

UNSW: Big Anxiety Research

The Big Anxiety Research Centre [BARC] is a unique transdisciplinary enterprise, dedicated to transforming thinking and practice in mental health through creative collaboration and cultural innovation.

PSYCHOLOGY TODAY:

International Case findings of Arts and Trauma:

  • after Hurricane Maria, Puerto Rican children benefited from arts-based activities that facilitated reflection.

  • incarcerated adolescent girls, found value in a musical theater performance program to express their experiences.

  • Chicago’s Project Fire uses glassblowing to help young victims of gun violence connect to a community, find mentorship, and aid their healing process

  • The Healing Uvalde Mural Project seeks to honour and remember the victims of the Uvalde shooting with colourful murals created by community members

DESIGN FOR SOCIAL IMPACT:

“We need to revolutionise social impact work IT IS TIME FOR A REBELLION. We are redefining social impact through equity-centered design”

We understand that all too often, the people who have been historically underserved, structurally disadvantaged and impacted by crises in our societies are left behind and excluded from decision-making when it comes to developing programs, policies, and research that can truly improve their lives.

CREATIVE AUSTRALIA:

Creative Australia’s wider work on the relationship between arts, health and wellbeing is held within Creative Recovery Network as one of three organisations currently delivering arts for wellbeing programs who collaborated on the research alongside Wesley Arts, which is part of Wesley Mission Queensland and the Big Anxiety Research Centre at UNSW.

Findings from 2022/23 Report:

  • In Australia, arts and health as an industry lacks leadership, policy and resources. A peak organisation, or perhaps an alliance, may serve to provide this kind of knowledge and leadership, providing a site through which to network, develop shared practice frameworks, and to provide the visibility required to attract further investment.
